Dr. Joseph Dayan Discusses Lymphedema with Motherly: What Breast Cancer Survivors Need to Know

Lymphedema, an under-discussed and often surprising side effect of breast cancer treatment, affects 20-30% of its survivors. It occurs when lymph nodes are removed during breast cancer surgery, which is common. As Dr. Joseph Dayan describes it, this removal disrupts the body’s natural “sewage system," causing chronic swelling and pain in the arms or legs. And, while breast cancer treatment eventually ends, lymphedema requires lifelong management—a reality that Dr. Dayan notes can be more emotionally challenging for some patients than their cancer journey itself. However, with proper education and an early understanding of potential risks, the effects of lymphedema can be better managed.
