Complex incisional hernias repaired in conjunction with the Bony Anchoring Reinforcement System (BARS) prevents hernia recurrence

This study, also from the European Journal of Plastic Surgery, evaluates the use of BARS specifically for complex incisional hernia repair.

Methodology and Patient Cohort

The study included 63 patients with complex incisional hernias who underwent repair with BARS. The technique involves anchoring synthetic mesh to bony landmarks to reinforce the hernia repair.

Key Findings

With an average follow-up of 3.1 years, the results are encouraging:

  1. No recurrent hernias in any patients
  2. One patient developed abdominal bulging, which was successfully retreated
  3. Five patients had mesh infections, but none required complete mesh removal
  4. Overall low complication rates

Implications for Clinical Practice

The BARS technique for complex incisional hernias offers several advantages:

  • Provides robust reinforcement for challenging hernia repairs
  • Demonstrates very low recurrence rates
  • Shows promising results even in complex cases

These initial results suggest that BARS could significantly improve outcomes in complex incisional hernia repairs, particularly in cases where traditional techniques may be insufficient.

As we continue to advance abdominal wall reconstruction techniques, approaches like BARS offer new possibilities for improving outcomes in challenging cases.
