Phrenic Nerve Surgery Featured in Medical Resource UpToDate

The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction at The Plastic Surgery Center is proud to announce that Dr. Matthew Kaufman’s comprehensive topic review entitled “Surgical Treatment of Phrenic Nerve Injury” was launched in January 2018 by UpToDate, an evidence-based, physician-authored clinical decision support resource.

According to Dr. Kaufman, this marks the first time the medical community, on a widespread basis, will have access to evidence-based information regarding the efficacy of phrenic nerve reconstruction for diaphragm paralysis. “It is a formal clinical guideline that includes phrenic nerve reconstruction as a standard part of the treatment protocol for diaphragm paralysis,” he adds.

This is also important because of the reach and reputation of UpToDate and its impact. UpToDate is relied on by over 1.3 million clinicians in 187 countries and nearly 90 percent of major academic medical centers in the United States. Its content is peer-reviewed exclusively by physicians who are recognized experts in their medical specialties.

Dr. Kaufman, who has performed over 450 phrenic nerve surgeries since 2007 on patients from around the United States and other countries, is the only known surgeon worldwide to do this surgery with any regularity. He has authored numerous articles and a book chapter on the topic.
